NYC has introduced curbside residential composting in Brooklyn and Queens. Residents now possess brown bins to collect food-based waste. NYC’s city council voted in June 2023 to make separation of food waste mandatory with rollout in the whole city set to begin in fall 2024. Enforcement of the composting will begin in April 2025, with residents facing fees for not complying. This waste will now be used to create fertilizer and electricity. How does this impact restaurants in NYC? By implementing city-wide composting, NYC is decreasing the overall environmental footprint of the restaurant industry in NYC by allowing customers to compost their take-out and delivery leftovers at home. Implementing curbside composting across the city also sets an example for other cities to follow in the future.
